It can happen to anyone. We accidentally delete an email that we really need. And it just happened to be important work file, attachment or picture. So now what? How can I recover that email? Is it at all possible? Surely, it can be permanently deleted?

Well, there is good news and bad news.

Restoring Deleted Emails

If you delete an email, it hasn’t really gone anywhere. Even if you’ve emptied your recycle bin or the “Trash” folder in your Inbox – the email still isn’t deleted. It’s just that your computer system now has no way to figure out where it is. But it’s there, still on your hard drive. By using special email recovery tools you can recover deleted emails because these programs identify these ‘missing’ files and can bring them back to life.

Now the bad news.

Act Quickly and Increase Your Chances

The bad news is you have to act quickly. You only have a small time-frame in which to try to attempt to recover your lost email. Every minute that you waste and continue to use the drive for anything that isn’t related to recovering your emails, you severely decrease your chances of successful email recovery. Why?

Well, because your hard drive is constantly overwriting files to make space for new information you put into it. If your hard drive is full and there is not much space or memory available – it is highly probable that the email has already been overwritten and deleted – permanently.

Other Problems with Recovering Deleted Emails

Not all deleted or lost emails go to “Trash” folder. If you have suffered a computer crash or hardware failure or your operating system is corrupted in some way, then it is unlikely that emails you have deleted can be recovered.

Also, if you haven’t opened the email at all or it hasn’t been deleted the usual way due to file corruption, you probably will have less of a chance to recover and restore the email in its entirety.

Nothing to Lose

Recover deleted email programs search and locate the emails that you have deleted. You can search by entering a specific keyword for example. Then, you can choose to preview the email to see it’s contents and if it’s been recovered in its original state by the program. You can also select to scan for what ever email program you are using (and need to recover) – either web based emails such as Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail or Outlook Express.

Best bit is this. Most of these email recovery programs are free to download. When they start scanning your hard drive looking for the deleted email and then manage to find it and when you are completely satisfied that that’s your missing email – then you can then proceed to purchase the software.

In essence, you have nothing to lose (if the email is not there – it’s not there) and everything to gain.

Well, at least you can get your deleted email back.

Though nowadays the term ‘Dongle’ refers to any device which is connected to a computer, but in the earlier times, it was used to refer to any software protection device. This article describes the PC support for resolving the problems of dongles. A dongle, designed for the purpose of software protection, is used as a high end form of a security to forestall the illegal copying of the software. The reason is that copying a hardware is much more cumbersome than copying a software. Dongle are basically used by proprietary vendors to protect the copy right of secure and expensive software like audio mixing or CAD software.

Brief History

The earlier versions of dongle used to be connected through a computer’s serial port. The presence of the proper hardware device used to be verified before downloading the secure software. Breaching this system was very easy since an experienced programmer could easily find the code in the software which indicated the presence of the hardware device. One of the earliest software which used dongle for software protection was Wordcraft, which was introduced in the market in 1980s. The dongle used by Wordcraft was a simple and passive device which used to transmit data to the pins of an external cassette device in a specific way. This was easily done since the cassette port supplied both power and data connections via a proprietary connector. Dataview Limited, an U.K based company, came up with a resin potted dongle, which was quite successful. In 1984, Sinclair QL computers featured a dongle which had the coded system software embedded in it. Later on dongles started featuring microprocessor and serial transceivers, which could communicate to the host independently. Since the complication of the design of dongles grew, efficient network support became necessary.

Dongles are mainly used for protecting the copyright of very expensive and vertical market software, such as printing, CAD/CAM, retail and digital audio workstation software. These devices come encoded with user particular license key, which enables specific features in the licensed application. This highly controlled licensing method restricts the user access to the application software. Modern dongle utilizes the Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports of a computer. It plugs into the USB port just like any other USB devices. Before starting to run, the application software on the host sends an encoded request to the dongle for an encrypted validation key. If the dongle sends the valid key, then only the application software starts running. The encoding must be cracked in order to crack the dongle. Some secure dongles have the encrypted software embedded in it, so that the host may request for it whenever required. Sometimes regular USB flash drives are used as dongles, that bear the hardware part numbers in accordance with the stored ID in the application software, which are matched before running the application software. A dongle could also be used by the users to store the user settings. PC support for copyright protection technology is rendered many service providers.

Drawbacks

There are several difficulties to implement the dongle protocol. Encryption of key is a quite complicated job. It should be done in such way that the user cannot crack it. Fabrication techniques are also required to prevent reverse engineering. Dongles could easily be cracked by using hardware cloning, in which the dongles are emulated by a device driver. For implementation of encryption and fabrication the expertise of a Network Support provider could be of immense help.
